Seventeen. That’s the net number of employees India’s five largest IT services companies added between them in the first nine months of FY26. TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech and Tech Mahindra have long absorbed engineering graduates by the tens of thousands, and now they’ve almost stopped growing. The same companies added 17,764 employees in the same period a year earlier. peoplematters

But “17” isn’t the whole story. It’s a net figure, and it’s a tug of war. TCS cut 25,816 employees over the period, while Infosys added 13,456, Wipro 9,740, HCLTech 1,885 and Tech Mahindra 752. Those numbers cancel out to almost exactly zero. So hiring didn’t freeze everywhere. One giant shrank sharply while the others kept growing, which is a very different story from a sector-wide freeze. multibagg

Who got cut matters more than how many. More than 12,000 of TCS’s exits were at the mid- and senior-management levels. That’s experienced talent, the people most mid-size firms struggle to attract, now in the open market. peoplematters

Why the giants are holding back: Analysts point to weak global demand, tighter client spending and AI-driven delivery models that reduce the need for fresh hiring, with some of the limited additions coming through acquisitions rather than direct recruitment. The industry is moving toward tighter cost control and selective hiring for niche skills instead of mass recruitment. analyticsindiamaganalyticsindiamag

What this means for your hiring plan:

  1. Senior talent is more available than it has been in years. Experienced engineers and managers who once saw a 500-person company as a step down are now open to conversations. Move fast, because they won’t stay available for long.
  2. The fresher pipeline is under strain. Campus hiring has slowed sharply and onboarding timelines have stretched. Graduates who would have joined a giant are looking for alternatives. Mid-size firms with a real training program can recruit strong freshers they’d normally lose to big-brand offers. peoplematters
  3. Don’t copy the giants’ playbook. Their net-zero hiring reflects their own margin and AI-delivery pressures, not a verdict on your demand. If your pipeline is growing, a hiring pause is a competitive gift to rivals who keep recruiting.
  4. Hire for the niche skills the giants still want. Hiring is shifting toward specialised capability, so those skills will stay contested even while headcount at the top stays flat.

A frozen giant doesn’t mean a frozen market. The talent is moving, and the companies with fast, focused hiring processes will collect it first.
